Cleveland Metroparks Zoo
The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo has a long history dating back to 1882 and was known as the Wade park in its original incarnation. In that year 14 American Deer and 73 acres of land were donated by Jeptha H.Wade to the city of Cleveland. Plans to build the Cleveland Museum Art blossomed in 1907 and this resulted in the zoo being moved to its present location.
During its early existence, the zoo inmates comprised mostly those of local origin but the period between 1910 and 1940 steady growth with regular addition of various facilities as well as new inmates at zoo. 1955 saw the addition of three elephants, two rhinos, two hippos, three giraffes and other smaller animals all of them obtained from an African Safari.

The Cleveland zoological society was invested with the control of the zoo in 1957 and two years the zoo suffered intense damages from heavy rains and melting snow leading to floods. The reptile collections at the zoo were completely washed away and the buildings also suffered significant damages. 5 years later the zoo recovered from these damages and added moated lion and tiger exhibits.
In 1968 the ownership of the zoo once again changed hands to the Cleveland Metropolitan Park District and in yet another transfer of ownership the management of the zoo came into the hands of the Cleveland Metroparks in 1975. Accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums was granted to Cleveland Metroparks Zoo in 1982. In 1985, the Cleveland Aquarium announced its intentions to close down for good. The collection of invertebrates and fishes were consequently moved to the zoo.
