The Cleveland zoological society was invested with the control of the zoo in 1957 and two years the zoo suffered intense damages from heavy rains and melting snow leading to floods. The reptile collections at the zoo were completely washed away and the buildings also suffered significant damages. 5 years later the zoo recovered from these damages and added moated lion and tiger exhibits.

In 1968 the ownership of the zoo once again changed hands to the Cleveland Metropolitan Park District and in yet another transfer of ownership the management of the zoo came into the hands of the Cleveland Metroparks in 1975. Accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums was granted to Cleveland Metroparks Zoo in 1982. In 1985, the Cleveland Aquarium announced its intentions to close down for good. The collection of invertebrates and fishes were consequently moved to the zoo.
