The center which opened in 1996 has three major areas of focus with regard to the exhibits - the Great lakes environment, science phenomenon and technology. The center launched a new outreach program during the school year 2005/06.Summer Science camps and Great Summer science also made their debut during 2006. These camps are a great source of education as well as fun to the participants and cater to different age profiles beginning kindergarten through the 8th grade. Participants going from the 8th grade to the 9th grade also have the opportunity of becoming volunteers at the center. After a successful stint as volunteer, the center may also offer a job to such participants who are interested.

The year 2006 had more things happening at the center. A new wind turbine was installed in the front yard of the center estimated to provide about 7% of the power requirement of the center. Soon after this, an array of 156 solar panels were installed in 2007 at the entrance to the center taking their captive power generation even higher. The Science center also has several interactive displays similar to COSI of Columbus, Ohio.

The Great Lake Science center is conveniently located in the midst of many other Cleveland attractions making it even more comfortable for you when you travel to Cleveland, Ohio.
